This is an oldie but a goodie….from my 2008 trip to the “Common Cemetery” in West Springfield Massachusetts. I spent quite a bit of time studying cemetery art and the changes of imagery carved into stones over time. These are “typical” of the late 1700’s. Some people find cemeteries creepy but I find them full of history.
It used to be common to mark the graves of children with small angels or lambs. On an outing with the Association of Gravestone Studies in Massachusetts I came across this little resting angel. I laid down on the grass in front of the monument to get this view. I found the stone and the image haunting but in a peaceful way.
